(on) design and more - DCEE4 (and DCEE5...)

Last Friday and Saturday, I attended the 4th International Workshop on design in Civil and Environmental Engineering (DCEE 2015) in Taipei City, Taiwan (http://dcee2015.info).
I gave two talks: on the first day, on the "Design for robustness, resilience and anti-fragility in the built and urban environment: considerations from a civil engineering point of view", and on the second day, on "The long way towards a sound framework for structural design: 10 years of experience in Rome".
I also chaired a session on the first day, and I gave a talk on our research team in Rome, since, in the committee meetings, it was decided that the the next workshop will be held in Rome in 2016 (on a date yet to be decided, probably in October).
During the conference, we visited the Songshan Cultural and Creative Park and we were given presentations on the Taipei 2016 Design Capital (http://wdc2016.taipei/en) from the World Design Capital CEO Wu Han-chung.
On a side activity, I visited the rooftop of Taipei 101 (a landmark super-tall skyscraper, the world's tallest until 2010), a night-market, the Taipei Expo Park, and the Taipei Fine Arts Museum (http://www.tfam.museum).

the long days of, IF CRASC '15

IF CRASC ’15, the Second Congress on Forensic Engineering and the Sixth Congress on Collapses, Reliability and Retrofit of Structures, concluded today at the Faculty of Civil and Industrial Engineering of the Sapienza University of Rome. Together with my colleagues at StroNGER srl (principal sponsor of the event) we have prepared a Facebook page with news from the conference: https://www.facebook.com/IFCRASC15 The conference was a great success, with more than 80 presentations, and 150 delegates.
On top of being a member of the organizing committee, I contributed with four papers:

antifragility (the next thing?)

What if cities, urban developments and structures could not only recover, but also grow stronger after adverse events (floods, earthquakes, terrorist attacks?).

What if they gained instead of suffering from everyday disorder?

Is over optimization, otherwise efficient for normal design purposes, a pitfall in our ever-changing society?

Is seeking the utmost efficiency an utopia?

Are we lacking redundancies?

How technology and modern design and construction methods can facilitate the above?

Can "antifragile design" by architects, engineers and urban planners, enhance a design for urban/disaster resilience?

Starting from Nicolas Taleb’s interesting book “Antifragile: Things That Gain from Disorder” I recently read (again), these are only some of the questions that came into my mind when I prepared two lessons for a safety-engineering course on risk analysis and robustness.

Is antifragility the next thing? Judging from web references and conference announcements this year, this certainly seems to be the case...

in vento 2014

A few days ago, while I was enjoying a long weekend break at the Greek islands, my colleague Francesco gave two presentations at the 13th Conference of the Italian Association for Wind Engineering (in vento 2014) held in Genova.

Francesco, ho has a PhD on Wind Engineering co-advised by Prof. Bontempi and Prof. Augusti of the Sapienza University of Rome, is broadly acknowledged for his contribution on the topic of Performance Based Wind Engineering (PBWE).

One of the presentations regarded the "Building occupants' comfort assessment in the PBWE framework", in collaboration with my good friend Pierluigi Olmati (now post-doc at the University of Surrey) and Prof. Franco Bontempi.
The study, that Francesco conceived, initiated after an original idea of the late Prof. Ciampoli, and was merely outlined last year on a paper I also contributed at the COMPDYN 2013 conference at the island of Kos.

The second presentation focused on the "Piezoelectric energy harvesting under air flow excitation", and was in collaboration with myself and Prof. Franco Bontempi. It regards the ESA-BIC (European Space Agency Business Incubator Center) project piezoVenergy by StroNGER. Francesco presented preliminary results from the Master Thesis of Sara Ferri, successfully defended last April.

In addition to the above presentations, Francesco also co-chaired a technical session on bridges.

Instructors*

Earlier today, my colleagues at StroNGER srl (www.stronger2012.com) and good friends Francesco Petrini and Chiara Crosti, gave a 4 hour seminar, part of a professional course for Registered Professional Engineers organized by the Engineering Chamber of Rome.
The course, develops for 12 hours in total, and is part of a continuing education for engineers.
Today's course focused on Earthquake Engineering and Fire Safety Engineering, two of the areas of excellence of Francesco and Chiara, and follows the first seminar given last week by Franco Bontempi and Stefania Arangio.
 



All four of them are excellent instructors and mentors, and, in my opinion, provided excellent insight on their topics of choice, on the more than 80 people that follow the seminar.
The seminar concludes with the final four hours next week (Thursday June 19)
